Bikoy fallout: Is the Integrated Bar of the Philippines in cahoots with the Opposition?

How in the world did an ex-con manage to convince members of mainstream media to go to the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) office to listen to him? Obviously someone influential from the Opposition contacted the media for him. The IBP office has security so someone higher up allowed the whole drama to unfold.

This “Bikoy” saga is proof that poverty is not the main problem in Ph. The main problem is the padrino system. It’s quite possible that powerful people like members of the IBP are in cahoots with members of the Opposition in promoting chaos in the country.

The whole scam has since unraveled as the truth about Peter Joemel Advincula’s crooked past slowly emerged thanks to the work of social media sleuths. Now there is a new term for being conned: na-bikoy.

Na-bikoy ang mga yellows. A con artist offered his services to play the part of a whistleblower who supposedly had information that could be used against the Duterte camp. Yellows weren’t aware he offered the same services and said he also had damning information about the Aquino camp.

The sad fact is, patronage politics or the padrino system is what’s ruining the country because it doesn’t level the playing field. Instead of uniting Filipinos, it promotes mistrust in Philippine society. This whole “Bikoy” saga has added to the damage to our society at so many levels.

Emergence of “Bikoy”: another trial-by-publicity stunt of the Opposition?

The timing of the emergence of the supposed person behind the “Bikoy” videos, a certain Peter Joemel Advincula, is quite suspect. The midterm elections is in a few days. The people pulling his strings are really desperate to win the elections by painting the Duterte family and their allies under a negative light. Too lame.

The only people who would fall for this are the people who already believe the claims even before the guy surfaced. They don’t believe in giving their enemies due process. So far there is no evidence provided. This is so reminiscent of Jun Lozada without the crying. Indeed, according to a Rappler report, “Advincula was accompanied by nuns” (recalling the Lozada circus in the mid-2000s) when he arrived at the Integrated Bar of the Philippines building for his press conference.

Mainstream media, for its part, keeps giving airtime to these menaces of Philippine society. Taking stock of the reports fielded by mainstream news channels following this circus, Mr David Yap notes, “The statement of some random scammer, without any investigation WHATSOEVER, is enough for mainstream media.”

The public should be outraged already because they are being taken for a ride. Observes Ms Malou Tiquia

Went to IBP, had prepared statement, had media to cover the event, then the usual choir was present. Seriously, same familiar script, just like against Villar, Binay, etc, right? Why do we fall for such?

Too bad for Bikoy, the public is tired of badly scripted melodrama and prefer action-packed, less talk productions. The people want to see evidence. Words are boring especially coming from an unknown trying-hard-for-his-fifteen-minutes-of-fame-bozo.

Mystery woman Maru Xie further strengthens links between “Bikoy”, the Yellowtards, and the #OtsoDiretso Opposition candidates

Following the arrest of “blogger” Rodel Jayme on charges of inciting sedition after being tagged as Patient Zero in the viral outbreak of the notorious “The Real Narco-list” videos, the spotlight is now on a certain Maru Xie, purportedly also known as Maru Nguyen.

Mugshot of Rodel Jayme (Photo source: ABS-CBN)

According to a National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) statement reported by the Philippine News Agency, Xie is part of a conversation found within Jayne’s Facebook account that establishes her being a person of interest in this case.

Netizen @doctorluckmd shared on Twitter what appears to be a woman who could be Xie (or Nguyen) together in a photo with Jayme taken from the profile page of one of her social media accounts.

However, as of this writing, it seems that both the Facebook and Instagram accounts of Xie had either been deactivated or deleted.

The Twitter handle @maruxie89 (which is the same as the handle used in the above defunct Instagram account), on the other hand, still seems to be active. Though not having much of a following, this account seems to be dedicated to promoting the campaign and the shoutouts of Yellowtard Opposition candidate Romy Macalintal.

Interestingly, a Facebook post of Macalintal “on the campaign trail” features a photo credited to “Maru Nguyen”.

Photos of Xie hobnobbing with other Yellowtard honchos have also started emerging all over social media.

What is the nature of Xie’s relationship with Rodel Jayme if, in fact, both know each other? Jayme for his part has also been seen schmoozing with a who’s who of Opposition Yellowtard leaders

One wonders then. Was Jayme or Xie also invited to the wedding of Jover Laurio as was most of these Yellowtard — and communist — personalities?

The Philippines’ foremost activists like the left-leaning Inday Espina Varona and Tonyo Cruz come across as elitist even as they supposedly champion issues important to the masses.

The plot thickens, indeed as the Web of lies, dishonest personalities, and hypocritical “activists” crystallises further.

Maria Ressa hobnobs with star “human rights” activists George and Amal Clooney!

The most recent social-climbing achievement of Rappler CEO Maria Ressa is the bit of schmoozing she’s been doing with celebrity activists George and Amal Clooney she exhibits in a recent tweet

Ironic that up for “discussion” with the power couple is the issue of “rule of law”. Perhaps Ressa and her new friends should take a bit of time to recall what rule of law really means to Ressa’s real boss.

Back in 2015, Mrs Clooney stepped up to assist in an initiative to expose the Aquino government’s human rights abuses. Interestingly the key perpetrator of the human rights abuses being investigated was no less than then Justice Secretary Leila De Lima herself…

De Lima’s initial violation back then was in defying the Supreme Court’s temporary restraining order on the travel ban against Arroyo. De Lima even risked disbarment for ignoring the highest court’s order. Senator Miriam Santiago likewise questioned De Lima’s action citing the DOJ had no legal basis to issue a watch-list order against Arroyo since there was no pending case against the former President and was only a respondent in a joint DOJ Comelec investigation on electoral fraud at that time.

Evidently, rule of law meant nothing to De Lima who defied an order issued by no less than the Philippines’ Supreme Court!

Suffice to say, Ressa and De Lima are real partners in crime considering both are currently in big trouble with the law. Nonetheless, both continue to be engaged in a mutual back-patting love-in likely to distract people from the real charges they face. Even from jail, De Lima is all praises for the failed “social news network” CEO

Well, whatever floats their boat, one would suppose. For now, there is no fooling anyone else other than the folks within their little chi chi cliques the hierarchy within which the are clambering upwards as a matter of desperate priority.

Ellen Tordesillas: Rabid supporter and mouthpiece of Trillanes

The fact is, “fact-checker” Ellen Tordesillas has been a supporter and ally of Senator Antonio Trillanes for decades. She campaigned for his release when he was still in jail for his crime against the Filipino people. She also uses her website to promote his advocacies and propaganda against his enemies.

Been blogging since 2009. I distinctly remember how motivated Tordesillas was in lobbying for the release of Trillanes from prison. She believed he was just doing what was good for the Philippines in rebelling against then President Gloria Arroyo — never mind that he broke the law, damaged property, and put Filipino civilians’ lives at risk.

The fact that Ellen Tordesillas campaigned for the release of Trillanes means she has been practicing partisan politics for decades. She was using her clout as a journalist to paint Trillanes as a hero. She was instrumental in riling up the public against Arroyo then.

Indeed, Ellen Tordesillas reminds me of that movie with Nicole Kidman whose character fell in love with a criminal who was in prison. She advocated for his release just like how Tordesillas advocated for Trillanes’s release believing he was innocent. Unfortunately, he was a real criminal.

Inquirer editor John Nery’s (@jnery_newsstand) intelligence-insulting FAQs on Maria Ressa’s “press freedom” circus

Inquirer editor John Nery asks himself a simple question in his column today, Assault on press freedom? Q and A:

“If the cyberlibel case [against Maria Ressa] was presumed regular, why is it an assault on press freedom?”

You’d think Nery would take this opportunity to articulate a really precise answer to this question to clarify all the confusion surrounding Ressa’s “assault on press freedom” circus. But no.

Here is his CONVOLUTED answer:

It relies on an extreme legal strategy that imperils everyone who posts online or on social media. In that sense, it is an assault not only on the freedom of the press but on freedom of expression itself. But the case must also be understood as part of a pattern: It is only one of nine cases filed against Rappler, with more investigations under way. Only those who refuse to see will fail to recognize the orchestrated character of the attacks on Rappler — and thus on a free press.

Huh??

It’s a baldly dishonest answer. For one thing consider how he describes those who disagree with his point of view whom he lumps under the label “Those who refuse to see”.

This is an unfounded judgemental label that altogether shuts down any further debate on the matter as far as Nery and the chi chi members of his clique’s points of view are concerned.

Mr Nery should apply a bit of humility to his writing. The fact is, there are many who put forth WELL-ARTICULATED arguments that he and his ilk REFUSE to consider. It’s an irony that flies way above their pointed heads.

Maria Ressa dismisses her critics as “trolls”, believes she holds a monopoly on being RIGHT!

Maria Ressa dismisses Filipinos who challenge her claim that she is being targeted by the Duterte government by labelling them as “trolls” who are merely following “marching orders”. That’s like saying her critics are all non-humans who have nothing of any worth to say. This is the height of arrogance.

It is indeed fitting that Maria Ressa will now be facing a real judge presiding over a real Philippine court. This marks the end of an era where Ressa served as sole self-appointed judge over whether anything she says is right or wrong. Finally, a third and authorised party gets to rule on the question over how right about certain things Ressa really is.

Maria Ressa is a media personality who abused her position as chief executive of a channel that has access to millions of Filipino eyeballs. She measured validity on the basis of popularity and used popularity to enforce validity. That’s as crooked as any media executive could ever get — a bald abuse of a power that entails enormous responsibility. It’s time Maria Ressa pay dearly for that abuse.

#DefendPressFreedom “activists” shriek “stop the attacks”. But no such “attacks” exist!

Dressed in black, not in their traditional yellow for some reason, the usual faces representing the usual “activism” is fired up once again. But, really, what are they on fire about?

That’s the million-peso question.

The sheer volume and shrillness of the noise surrounding what is essentially the vacuous notion of some sort of “attack on press freedom” these skills are kicking up all just simply highlights that they lack a direct response to the charges Rappler CEO Maria Ressa faces.

The reality is that this is all just amounts to a storm in a teacup. This is evident in the small set of familiar faces consistently seen in these “rallies”. Thus, the question these shills need to consider is how big a swathe of Philippine society their message resonates with.

Indeed, Maria Ressa herself is not above crying bloody libel when she’s on the business end of an “attack” involving writer Katrina Stuart-Santiago back in 2012…

The conflict seems to revolve around elder “journalist” Ressa taking issue with the way Stuart-Santiago posted the article, which contains some opinions which implied some allegations about the blanket motives of some of the people involved in the circus and the broader agenda of Rappler.com.

Ultimately there is an election to be won and the Opposition are missing the mark focusing on drivelous “activism” such as this.

Did Maria Ressa LIE to the Associated Press (@AP) regarding her arrest? #DefendPressFreedom

The Associated Press today announced the deletion of a tweet posted Wednesday and implied that it was misled by statements provider by Rappler CEO Maria Ressa…

The AP deleted a Wednesday tweet on journalist Maria Ressa’s arrest. It incorrectly said she was arrested for criticizing Philippine President Duterte. Authorities said she was arrested over a libel complaint, but Ressa argues the government misapplied the law to target her.

This is a landmark retraction by a major news media organisation as many others continue to “report” misleading information about Ressa’s arrest on charges of libel.

Erstwhile respected “journalist” Christiane Amanpour, for example, seemingly stands by the very significantly slanted take on the matter that the AP now distances itself from…

You know a government is desperate when they arrest a journalist.

President Duterte: FREE @mariaressa NOW.

@UNESCO
@pressfreedom
#MariaRessa
#PressFreedom

It seems Amanpour needs to be reminded of the most relevant fact of this matter — that only a Philippine court can decide on that which she is calling for.

Perhaps the rest of the global “journalism” community need to get a grip and step back from all the misleading emotionalism kicked up by Maria Ressa in her desperation to sidestep the the task she is being taken to today. It’s an opportune time for the community to revisit the core values of the journalism profession and understanding the root cause of the crisis of relevance and credibility that the corporate news media industry suffers today.

Maria Ressa may end up behind bars thanks to a cybercrime law Noynoy Aquino signed! #DefendPressFreedom

Those who insist that the arrest of Maria Ressa is an “attack on press freedom” are being stupid for continuing to criticise someone you think has the power to lock you up. The fact that you are still free despite criticising him makes you look stupid as well.

Ressa wasn’t arrested because she criticised Duterte. She was arrested for a libel case against her over an article published on her online site. It was a private individual who filed the case, not Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Please check your facts.

Interestingly enough, Noynoy Aquino was the one who signed the cyber crime act into law. Maria Ressa was helping Noynoy oust the late former Chief Justice Renato Corona during his impeachment trial when her online site published the libelous article vs W Keng. Now she could be jailed using Noynoy’s cyber crime law. Oh the irony!

I’d be totally surprised if Noynoy speaks out against a law he fully endorsed during his term. The law is working to put an end to libellous acts of his own allies in mainstream media.
